ABOUT US
History
SEP continues the work of the Social Entrepreneurs Network (2001 -2003) with a refined focus on practitioners and change agents and a new and additional emphasis upon public policy innovation to encourage social enterprise.
The term ‘social entrepreneurship’ appeared in Australia about 1999. ‘Social enterprise’ appeared about the same time. ‘Community enterprise’ has had a longer history, having been used  in reference to employment creation ventures in disadvantaged communities since about 1980.
‘Co-operative enterprise’ has been a continuous strand of activity and debate in Australia since the 1870s, with peak periods of enterprise formation in the wake of both first and second world wars (the first national congress of co-operative enterprises took place in 1920). Mutuals and friendly societies were a strong part of Australian life in the last thirty years of the nineteenth century, but were marginalized in the twentieth - some are now beginning to re-invent themselves for a new era.
The term ‘community economic development’ has enjoyed a usage spanning some three decades in Canada, India, New Zealand and South Africa, but has not been used widely in Australia, with the possible exception of small town and rural community enterprise. The term 'social economy' has enjoyed widespread use in Europe and the UK for the past decade, receiving added impetus in the 1990s in association with Third Way thinking, but its use in Australia dates only from the beginning of this century.
Various sector networks and peak bodies have operated around some of these terms, but the Social Entrepreneurs Network (SEN) was the first attempt to develop a national cross-sectoral, cross-industry organization for social enterprise activity. Following SEN, a permanent infrastructure, development body, and public voice for this activity is of critical importance.
